St. Louis — Some faculty and students at Washington University plan to protest at Friday's commencement to show their disapproval for the university's decision to award conservative leader Phyllis Schlafly an honorary degree.

The director of the Woman and Gender Studies program, Mary Ann Dzuback said she believes there are plans by some to turn their backs when Schlafly is honored, and students may have signs or wear armbands to show their opposition.

She said Schlafly should not be honored because of her stand against feminism and the Equal Rights Amendment.

Schlafly received her bachelor's and law degree from the university.

Schlafly said Friday she was honored to get the recognition and said she has faced protests previously on college campuses.
