The Metro East community of Washington Park has a new police chief.
Following the recommendation of Mayor John Thornton, the village board voted not to renew Isadore Chambers' contract. They replaced her with Calvin Hammonds, a sergeant in the department.
Thornton appointed Chambers chief in mid-2005, but said he wanted to boost what he described as the department's sagging morale and go in a new direction.
Hammonds is a 30-year veteran of the department.
